Marshall
Gilkes grew up in a musical family. His mother taught
piano and voice, and his father was a conductor in
the Air Force, which meant living in various places
throughout the United States. A graduate of Interlochen
Arts Academy, Marshall also studied at the University
of Northern Colorado and William Paterson University.
After moving to New York in 1998, Marshall played
with Machito, Chico O'Farrill, Oliver Lake and Tito
Puente Jr. From 2001 to 2002, he performed in the
national and Japanese tours of the Broadway show "Swing".
In 2003 Marshall was a finalist in the prestigous
Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
