Marshall Gilkes grew up in a musical family. His mother taught piano and voice, and his father was a conductor in the Air Force, which meant living in various places throughout the United States. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy, Marshall also studied at the University of Northern Colorado and William Paterson University. After moving to New York in 1998, Marshall played with Machito, Chico O'Farrill, Oliver Lake and Tito Puente Jr. From 2001 to 2002, he performed in the national and Japanese tours of the Broadway show "Swing". In 2003 Marshall was a finalist in the prestigous Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.
